Last night we had three professors attend (Sun, Lee, and Fuller). That's never happened before, and it was great to have them there.
However, student turnout was low. There were five students and four current officers. Last semester our first social mixer had about 60 students. What did we do different this time?
1. We relied on the monitors in Tahoe Hall to promote the event. Three of the students and two of the professors were from classes I talked about the event in. I think people come to these things because they think we're cool, and other cool people will be there. We have to announce these things in every class.
2. We promoted the event a week ahead of time, because we were better prepared this time. However, I think that backfired because people forgot about the event by the next week.
3. The venue changed from downtown to Hoppy's. I think people prefer the downtown venue because if they are hanging out there already, they can just stop in and see if it is cool or lame, and easily duck out and go to another bar. With Hoppy's they have to make a special trip there, then drive away.
In the future I recommend we change these things back to what we were doing last semester. Hold the event downtown, promote the week of, and announce it in every class.
